Keeping your car looking shiny and new doesn’t have to be expensive or time-consuming. With the right products and techniques, you can easily wash and wax your own vehicle to achieve professional-quality results.

Follow these 10 simple steps for a sparkling clean finish:

Car Wash and Wax
  1. Inspect and Prepare the Area Before washing, inspect your car's exterior for things like bird droppings, tree sap, and serious dirt or grime accumulations. You'll want to loosen these types of debris with a degreasing product before the main wash. Also, make sure you park in a flat, shaded area near an outdoor spigot or hose. Remove any accessories or loose items from the exterior.
  2. Rinse the Car Attach your hose nozzle to a light stream or shower setting. Starting from the top down, gently spray the entire car exterior to remove loose dirt and dust. Be sure to rinse the wheels, wheel wells, bumpers, and all crevices. This prevents scratching the paint in the next steps.
  3. Wash from the Top Down Fill one bucket halfway with warm water and add a few ounces of quality car wash soap, stirring gently. Use a dedicated wash mitt or sponge and soak it in the soapy water first. Gently wash from the car's roof down the sides, rinsing the mitt as needed. Use straight back-and-forth motions. Get wheel wells and door jambs too. Avoid direct sunlight to limit water spotting.
  4. Use Proper Washing Technique Take care to not press too hard or scrub aggressively on the paint. Rinse soap before it dries. Use one hand to stabilize - bracing allows you to follow curves better. For stubborn bugs or dirt, spray detailer fluid to help lift rather than harsh rubbing.
  5. Rinse Thoroughly Once washing is complete, rinse off all soap residue using your hose on the shower setting again. Start from the top and thoroughly rinse every exterior surface from corner to corner. Double-check for remnant suds hidden near badges, grills, or lights. Remaining soap leads to water spots.
  6. Dry Properly with Microfiber Important! Avoid air drying or you'll get spots. Gently pat dry the car from top to bottom using high-quality microfiber drying towels - one section at a time. Carefully wipe mirrors, chrome, and glass. Check cracks and crevices for hidden moisture.
  7. Clean Wheels and Tires Mix all-purpose cleaner with water in a spray bottle. Generously spray each wheel barrel and allow to soak for 30-60 seconds first. Use a dedicated wheel brush and gently scrub debris and brake dust buildup. Rinse the wheels before moving onto tires.
  8. Shine Tires Apply a dedicated tire gel or spray shine product to exterior sidewalls using a foam applicator. Remove overspray on wheels or paint with a quick detailer spray. Buff sidewalls to an evenly glossy finish using a microfiber towel.
  9. Wax Paintwork Machine polishers allow for quicker application, but wax can easily be applied by hand using foam pads. Use overlapping circular motions over 2' by 2' sections. Allow the wax to slightly haze, then gently remove it with a fresh microfiber using back-and-forth motions.
  10. Admire the Finish! When completed according to these key steps, stand back and admire your car's wet-look shine and sparkling, professional-grade finish! The investment of taking proper care pays off in longevity and added value for your vehicle.

Extra Car Wash and Wax Tips:

  • Wash cars in the shade whenever possible. Avoid waxing in direct sunlight.
  • Rinse wash equipment like mitts, brushes, and buckets thoroughly after each use.
  • Be sure to safely dispose of dirty wash water to avoid runoff issues.
  • Wash cars every 2 weeks or when noticeably dirty for best results.
  • Wax or seal paint every 3 months to protect the clearcoat finish.
  • To prevent swirls, avoid using circular motions when cleaning or drying.
  • Invest in high quality microfiber cloths and a dual-bucket method for a flawless wash.
  • Use carnauba wax for the longest-lasting, deepest shine.
  • Don't use dishwashing liquid - car soaps are specially formulated to not strip wax.
  • Keep an eye out for faded black trim and treat it occasionally with a restorative product.
  • Corner detailing like badges, fog lamps and wheels make a big difference.
  • Avoid using the same towels on paint that were used on glass or wheels.
  • Dry door jambs and trunk seals since trapped moisture causes mold and odors.
